Black’s basic setup. A durable response to closed openings like the Queen Pawn (1.d4) and English (1.c4) openings. Black does not immediately contest the center, even encourages White to occupy it with pawns.

Classical Variation

White has chosen an aggressive line with his fifth move, 5.Nf3. Black will try to open the game by attacking White’s pawn center.

6… Nc6
